Alexander Göttmann (Russian: Гетман) (born June 10, 1957 in Korjakowka , Kazakhstan ) is a German artist, painter and sculptor for metal sculptures.

Life

Göttmann was born in 1957 to parents of German origin in Korjakowka, in the Soviet Union. After completing the 10th grade, he learned the profession of electrical fitter and designer in Pavlodar , Kazakhstan, from 1974 to 1978 . This was followed by two years of military service in the Soviet army, during which he was given corresponding tasks due to his artistic disposition. After his military service, he first worked as a designer in an advertising agency and a power plant.

From 1981 Göttmann completed his studies in painting as well as sculpture and design at the then Municipal Theater and Art Academy in Almaty, now the Kazakh National Art Academy , named after Temirbek Schurgenow (KAZNAI). He graduated in 1986 with a diploma as a designer and painter.

In 1994 they moved to Germany. Göttmann has lived and worked in Eschweiler since then . The artist has participated in exhibitions at home and abroad. His pictures and sculptures have been exhibited in his home country of Kazakhstan, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy, where he exhibited in a gallery in 1999 as part of the 4th Venice Biennale D'Arte . In 1997, Göttmann founded the Eschweiler art workshop , which he took over as artistic director and where he also taught.

At the suggestion of Göttmann, a cooperation between the design department of the FH Aachen under the direction of Dean Helmut J. Jakobs and the Kazakh National Academy of the Arts started in 2006 . In the period that followed, up to 2017, Göttmann supported the collaboration between the two universities due to his technical and artistic competence and, in particular, his language skills.

Göttmann has been the representative of the Kazakh National Academy of the Arts in Germany since 2016, which also awarded him the title of honorary professor in 2018.

After studying sculpture, painting and design, Göttmann worked exclusively as a painter until 1987. Göttmann's painting cannot be assigned to a particular school or particular art direction. Rather, he tries to break new ground and combined elements of informal painting with figurative drawings. Birds are the leitmotif of his pictures, which have shaped his life since his youth when he was the youngest of four children and had to look after the family's geese. After moving to Germany, he continued to observe birds on the island of Föhr when he made special sketches of the seagulls there. The main focus of his observations were the behavior of the birds in order to be able to derive their emotions such as aggression, anger and joy from their movements. His figurative sketches and drawings always have wings, without it being possible to differentiate whether they are angels, gods or other fantasy creatures. Göttmann mainly uses a mixture of oil paints and sand for the design of his motifs.

Göttmann discovered sculpture in 2006 when the sculptor Lothar Scheffler asked him to use sketches for Göttmann's seagulls as a template for his own statues. Göttmann's sculptures primarily consist of various techniques. On the one hand he works with wire, on the other hand he uses the clay for modeling. First he builds scaffolding for clay figures with wire until he realizes that these wire frames have such a strong expressiveness that the clay was no longer necessary.

Over time, Göttmann discovered cutlery as a stylistic device, which, however, can only be recognized by the sculptures at second glance. He creates sculptures like fish, frogs, mermaids and mystical figures from knives, forks and spoons. These forms often stem from lengthy image inventions in the medium of drawing and painting. Göttmann came up with the idea of the art of cutlery when he met the soccer player Toni Schuhmacher , who wanted Göttmann to make a sculpture similar to a fish. When thinking about what the fish's scales could be made of, Göttmann came up with the idea of using cutlery. In his sculptures he differentiates between male beings, so-called “bird people”, and female beings, the “winged beings”.
