Alexander Haas (politician)

Alexander Haas (born February 22, 1933 in Graz ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and farmer. From 1970 to 1981 he was a member of the Styrian Landtag and from 1981 to 1988 a member of the Federal Council .

education and profession

Haas attended the elementary school St. Veit near Graz from 1939 to 1944 and then from 1943 to 1949 graduated from the secondary school and the federal high school in Graz. He continued his education through agricultural specialist courses and courses and in 1958 passed the agricultural master's examination. Subsequently, he worked as a farmer from 1961 to 1989. After the end of his political career, Haas passed the university entrance examination in 1989 and studied history at the University of Graz between 1989 and 1995 . He finished his studies in 1995 with a graduation as a Magister of Philosophy (Mag. Phil.). In 1999 he received his doctorate with his dissertation on the "Steirischen Landbund" and its predecessor organizations.

Politics and functions

Haas was the founding chairman of the Styrian rural youth in the Graz-Umgebung district and was a long-time functionary of the regional management of the Styrian rural youth. From 1964 to 1972 he was a member of the Chamber Council of the State Chamber for Agriculture and Forestry in Styria and in 1965 founded the rural advisory and conversion group "Grazer Bergland". In local politics he worked from 1965 to 1985 as Vice Mayor of the municipality of Stattegg , within the party he held the function of the main district party chairman of the ÖVP Graz-Umgebung from 1967 to 1989. He represented the ÖVP Styria from 1970 to 1981 in the Styrian Landtag and was a member of the Austrian Federal Council from June 23, 1981 to June 15, 1988. Haas was also chairman of the dairy farm in Graz from 1972 to 1993.

Private

Haas comes from an old Landbündler family and grew up on a farm near the city of Graz.
