Alexander Hamilton Coffroth

Alexander Hamilton Coffroth (born May 18, 1828 in Somerset , Pennsylvania , †  September 2, 1906 in Markleton , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1866 and again from 1879 to 1881 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alexander Coffroth attended public schools in his home country and the Somerset Academy . He then published a newspaper in Somerset for five years. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1851, he began to work in Somerset in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He took part in several regional party conventions and in 1860 in both Democratic National Conventions in Charleston and Baltimore . In addition, in July 1872 he was again a delegate at the federal party conference in Baltimore. In 1867 he worked as the Assessor of Internal Revenue for the financial administration.

In the congressional election of 1862 , Coffroth was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Joseph Bailey on March 4, 1863 . In 1865 he was re-elected. His Republican rival, William Henry Koontz , objected to the outcome of the election. When this was granted, Coffroth had to cede his mandate to Koontz on July 18, 1866. During his time as a congressman, the civil war ended and the 13th amendment was ratified , which abolished slavery . He was one of the pallbearers at the funeral services for the murdered President Abraham Lincoln .

In the congressional elections of 1878 , Coffroth was re-elected to Congress in the 17th district of his state as the successor to Jacob Miller Campbell , where he completed another legislative period between March 4, 1879 and March 3, 1881. During this time he was Chairman of the Committee on Invalid Pensions . In 1880 he declined to run again. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Alexander Coffroth practiced as a lawyer again. He died on September 2, 1906 - the last pallbearer at the Lincoln funeral service - in Markleton and was buried in Somerset.
