Career

William Koontz attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1851, he began to work in Somerset in his new profession. Between 1853 and 1856 he was a district attorney in Somerset County . Politically, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In May 1860, he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1861 and 1868 he was employed by the Somerset County Court Administration.

In the congressional elections of 1864 , the Democratic incumbent Alexander Hamilton Coffroth was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC against William Koontz in the 16th  constituency of Pennsylvania . As early as 1865, the work of Parliament had been strained by tensions between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly failed impeachment process. The ratification of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution also took place during Koontz's time as a member of Congress .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Koontz practiced law again. He also worked as a consultant for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad railroad company . Between 1899 and 1902 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . He died on July 4, 1911 in Somerset, where he was also buried.
