Alexander Heinrich Neidhart (* 1817 in Burg Breuberg ( Odenwaldkreis ); † December 6, 1886 in Worms ) was a German politician and mayor of the city of Worms from 1860–1861 .

Private

Neidhart was born in Breuberg Castle in 1817 . After starting his studies in Giessen and dropping it prematurely because of the death of his parents, he came to Worms in 1846. Through entrepreneurial foresight, he initially acquired a small financial fortune.

Term of office

Since his predecessor Adam Joseph Betz had resigned his office as mayor of the city of Worms after just four years, Neidhart was elected as the new mayor of the city by the municipal council.

In 1856 Neidhart was a member of the founding committee of an association that set itself the goal of erecting a Luther memorial in Worms . He was a member of the local council from 1856–1861. When Neidhart was appointed mayor of the city of Worms in 1860, he surprisingly resigned his office the following year, 1861. The reason for this was a dispute in the local council about the cancellation of representation funds, which also put his own remuneration as mayor at risk, in the budget, which was enforced against his will. Neidhard felt this measure, which was put through under pressure, was an unfriendly cost-saving measure and expressed his incomprehension that the community had enough money to approve after a fire, but cost-intensive measure to widen the Worms Hardtgasse.

It can be assumed that Neidhart was not able to cope with the discussion in the municipal council and accordingly resigned his office prematurely. Since no successor for the office of mayor could be found, the local council was forced to dissolve itself in accordance with the rules in force at the time in order to clear the way for full new elections.

After his death

It is very likely that Neidhart did not illegally enrich himself before his term of office, because the Wormser Zeitung described Neidhart in an obituary as a “disciple of humanity”. Furthermore, he is posthumously honored in the newspaper with the words: “A life rich in charitable activity, endowed with offices that do not register money and property, but only make us aware that the duty of human love to the best of our knowledge and ability is sufficient have brought him the greatest pleasure.
