Alexander Iosifovich Schalnikow ( Russian Александр Иосифович Шальников ;. Scientific transliteration Aleksandr Iosifovič Šal'nikov ;. Until 1928 he studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Leningrad. He then researched the structure and properties of alkaline metals in the field of solid-state physics until 1933. Until 1946 he investigated surface phenomena of intermediate states in superconductors and in 1960 developed a measuring device for recording the values ​​of liquid helium in metal vessels. He also researched the behavior of colloids at very low temperatures and the development of thin superconducting metal films for the manufacture of printed circuits and integrated circuits.

In 1946 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and in 1972 a full member. In 1972 he received the Lebedev Gold Medal of the Academy of Sciences and in 1985 the State Prize of the USSR .
