Alexander Sauerweid ( Russian Александр Иванович Зауервейд ; also: Gottlob Alexander Sauerweid * February 8 jul. / 19th February  1783 greg. In Kurland ; † October 13 jul. / 25. October  1844 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian battle and horse painter and eraser .

Life

Sauerweid studied from 1801 at the Dresden Art Academy . There he was on friendly terms with his teacher, Professor Gerhard von Kügelgen . After ten years in Dresden, he returned to Russia and worked there at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art . In 1831 he was appointed professor.
