Alexandre-Ferdinand-Léonce Lapostolle
Alexandre-Ferdinand-Léonce Lapostolle (born December 21, 1749 in Maubeuge , † December 19, 1830 ) was a French chemist .
Orphaned at the age of twelve, he attended college in his hometown . He did a two-year apprenticeship with a local pharmacist and then went to Paris , where he was a student of the pharmacists Mege and Antoine Cadet de Vaux . He studied physics and chemistry with Rouelle, Baume, Macquer and Sage. Because of disappointed love he spent a while in the Carthusian monastery in Moulins in Bourbonnais.
On the advice of his master, he went to Amiens in March 1773 , began writing letters of recommendation from Parisian scholars to the pharmacist Vallot and married his daughter. From 1777 he gave lectures on chemistry and natural sciences and a few years later became professor of chemistry at the medical school in Amiens.
He won hydrogen and rock oil from the distillation of hard coal, reported on it on January 24, 1784 in the Journal de Paris and made a name for himself in aeronautics. He also dealt with lightning rods and suggested straw ropes around 1821, but this was rejected.
