Alexander Luther (zoologist)

Alexander Ferdinand Luther (born February 17, 1877 in Helsinki ; † August 9, 1970 ibid) was a Finnish zoologist and developmental biologist at the University of Helsinki .

Luther received his candidate degree from Helsinki University in 1900 and his licentiate in 1904. From 1903 to 1911 he was a lecturer at the University's Zoological Museum and in 1917 curator. From 1918 to 1947 he was an associate professor of zoology. He was also director of the zoological station in Tvärminne.

Among other things, he dealt with the comparative anatomy of sharks and rays and with land and freshwater gastropods in Finland as well as vortex worms (Turbellaria).

From 1905 to 1907 he was on a scholarship in Heidelberg and Munich. From 1912 to 1914 he was with Hans Spemann in Rostock to study developmental biology.

With Odo Reuter, he edited the Bibliotheca zoologica Fenniæ (in: Acta societatis pro fauna et flora fennica , 1902-1908).

He was an honorary member of the German Zoological Society and from 1948 a foreign member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences .
