Alexander Nikolajewitsch Wartschenko ( Russian Александр Николаевич Варченко ; English transcription Alexander Nikolaevich Varchenko, born February 9, 1949 ) is a Russian-American mathematician who deals with topology , algebraic geometry and mathematical physics.

Wartschenko attended a special boarding school for mathematics in Moscow and studied at Lomonosov University , where he graduated in 1971 and received his doctorate in 1974 under Vladimir Arnold (candidate title). He published his first mathematical work as a student in 1969. From 1974 to 1984 he conducted research at Lomonossow, where he completed his habilitation in 1982 (Russian doctorate). From 1984 he was professor of mathematics at the Moscow Institute of Oil and Gas. Since 1991 he has been a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . In 1990/91 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . Among other things, he was visiting scholar at the University of Bonn (1977) and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn (1992, 1998, 2001, 2002), at IHES , at RIMS in Kyoto , at ETH Zurich , at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , the University of Tokyo, the University of Paris and the University of Leiden.

Wartschenko worked as a student of Arnold in the area of ​​singularity theory differentiable mappings, which he had researched. He also dealt with the application of representation theory (of Lie groups and quantum groups) and algebraic geometry to special functions and precisely solvable equations in mathematical physics.

In 1973 he received the Moscow Mathematical Society Prize . In 1990 he gave a plenary lecture at the ICM in Kyōto ( Multidimensional hypergeometric functions in Conformal Field Theory, Algebraic K-Theory, Algebraic Geometry ) and in 1974 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Vancouver ( Algebro-geometrical equisingularity and local topological classification of smooth mappings ).
