Alexander Petrovich Kovalenko ( Russian Александр Петрович Коваленко ; Armenian Ալեքսանդր Պյոտրի Կովալենկո ; born August 9, 1943 in Polewskoi , Russian SFSR ; † April 1, 2002 in Yerevan , Armenia ) was a Soviet- Armenian football player .

life and career

Alexander Kowalenko was born in Polewskoi , Russia, in 1943 . He began playing professional football in 1960 at the Armenian club Ararat Yerevan , to which he would remain loyal throughout his career. In 1963, Kowalenko rose with his club from the highest Soviet league , where, however, the direct rise again succeeded. His greatest success with Ararat was under coach Nikita Simonjan in the 1973 season winning the Soviet double when they won the championship and the Soviet cup. With Ararat, he then moved to the 1974/75 European Cup in the following year , where they only failed in the quarter-finals at Bayern Munich . Kowalenko was involved in all four European games. After Ararat could win the Soviet Cup again in 1975, he ended his career as an active football player.

He died on April 1, 2002 in Yerevan.
