Alexander Schiffler

Alexander Schiffler (born January 20, 1982 in Dresden ) is a German disabled athlete and Paralympic participant.

Personal history

Alexander Schiffler was diagnosed with a tumor in his knee at a young age , which had to be surgically removed. The doctors opted for a reverse plastic surgery , in which the ankle of the removed leg is placed in the place of the knee, which allows relatively normal walking with a prosthesis. After graduating from school, he learned the profession of orthopedic mechanic .

Athletic career

Because of his handicap, he chose sitting volleyball as a sport . He played sitting volleyball at Dresdner SC in 1898 . With this team he played so successfully since 1996 that he was appointed to the German national team, with which he was soon used successfully in the performance group D. Later he also played for BV Leipzig eV In 2000 he took part in the Paralympic Summer Games for the first time, in which the German sitting volleyball team reached 5th place. This was followed by a silver medal at the World Championships in 2002, then he won silver medals at the European Championships in 2003, 2005 and 2015. There were also bronze medals at the European Championships in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2013.

The highlight of his success for him and the German sitting volleyball team was winning a bronze medal at the 2012 Paralympic Summer Games in London .

For winning this medal, he and the team received the Silver Laurel Leaf on September 1, 2012 .

His current association are the BV Leipzig eV and the Dresdner SC 1898.
