Alexandra Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip. Its namesake, in turn, is Alexandra of Denmark (1844–1925), wife of the English King Edward VII and mother of his successor George V.
