Grand Duchess Alexandrine used the cottage as a widow's residence for 50 years

The Alexandrinen Cottage is one of the so far not renovated buildings of the once grand ducal Baltic seaside resort Heiligendamm .

The cottage , located a bit out of the way in the forest to the west of the main complex on the steep coast directly above the sea, was built in 1839/40 by order of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich by the Mecklenburg architect Georg Adolf Demmler on a landscaped lake terrace . Paul Friedrich gave the Mediterranean villa to his wife, the Grand Duchess and Prussian Princess Alexandrine of Prussia (1803-1892) , as a lodging house. The house had its own 80-meter long walkway, to which stone stairs led down. In January 2017, the Liegnitz-Steg , as it is called, was so badly damaged by the Axel storm that it was closed. It should not only be repaired by May 2018 for 360,000 euros, but also made barrier-free. Both sides of the footbridge are to have a 50 meter long ramp.

The building, which is noticeably asymmetrical for Heiligendamm, has two octagonal towers of different heights and is characterized from the outside by the surrounding verandas facing the lake. The Alexandrinen Cottage was exempt from the sale of Heiligendamm in 1873 and also after the November Revolution of 1918 as a summer residence in the private assets of the ducal family. In 1945 it was expropriated and in 1947 it was publicly owned as Haus Weimar .

With the total privatization of Heiligendamm, the Alexandrinen Cottage was passed on to the initiator's family, who want to use the historically significant house, which is listed as a historical monument, for private use after renovation and renovation.

Others

The cottage has already served as a filming location for German TV productions several times. From September to December 1999 the German band Rammstein rented the house for the pre-production of the 2001 album Mutter .
