Alexandrine of Prussia (1803-1892)
Friederike Wilhelmine Alexandrine Marie Helene Princess of Prussia (* February 23, 1803 in Berlin , † April 21, 1892 in Schwerin ) was a Prussian princess and hereditary Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] by marriage .
Life
Alexandrine was the seventh of ten children and the fourth daughter of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. (1770–1840) from his marriage to Princess Luise (1776–1810), daughter of Grand Duke Karl II of Mecklenburg [-Strelitz] and Princess Friederike Caroline Luise of Hesse-Darmstadt . Alexandrine owes her first name to her godfather, Tsar Alexander I of Russia .
The young princess grew up very harmoniously with her siblings. In 1810, when Alexandrine was only seven years old, her mother died. After this loss, she bonded closely with her family (especially her father) and developed a sense of family that she would keep throughout her life.
After a marriage offer from the Swedish Crown Prince Oskar had been rejected by the Berlin court, Alexandrine married the Hereditary Grand Duke Paul Friedrich von Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] (1800–1842), the eldest son of the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich, who had died at the time, on May 25, 1822 in the Royal Palace of Berlin Ludwig and his first wife, the Russian Grand Duchess Helena Pavlovna . Karl August Varnhagen von Ense reports on this event: “The wedding of Princess Alexandrine. Small share in the people, also small because it is known that there is no real inclination in the game. "
The couple initially lived in the grand ducal palace at Ludwigslust and resided in Schwerin after Paul Friedrich took office in 1837.
After the death of her husband, the grand duchess widow lived in the Alexandrinen Cottage in Heiligendamm and in the Schwerin Alexandrinen Palais and continued to exert great political influence.
Alexandrine was buried next to her husband in Schwerin Cathedral. She was lady of the Order of Louise , the Order of Theresa and the Russian Order of Saint Catherine .
The Alexandrinenbad in Freienwalde ad Oder and the Alexandrinenstift in Ludwigslust, the oldest kindergarten in Mecklenburg founded in 1829, have been named after them since 1823 .
