Renate Kruger

Renate Krüger (born July 23, 1934 in Spremberg , Niederlausitz ; † May 27, 2016 in Schwerin ) was a German art historian , writer and publicist who had lived in Schwerin since 1939.

Life

War, collapse and the post-war years had a strong formative effect on Renate Krüger's childhood and adolescence and, above all, raised awareness of religious and historical-philosophical issues. After graduating from the Goethe High School , Renate Krüger studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Rostock , often came into confrontation with the totalitarian GDR regime and, during a temporary exclusion from studies, worked in the exhibition of the Dresden paintings returned from the Soviet Union of the Berlin National Gallery.

From 1958 to 1965 she worked at the State Museum in Schwerin and lost her job for political reasons. In 1966 she received her doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Greifswald .

After a short employment at the Schwerin Institute for Monument Preservation, Renate Krüger worked as a freelance author of art and cultural history non-fiction books, novels and essays. She paid particular attention to art educational fiction for children and young people as well as Mecklenburg regional studies. For a time she was active in the journalistic field of church institutions. Her biographical research on Gertrud von le Fort was not published in the GDR. Numerous trips took her especially to Hungary and the former CSSR.

After the political change in 1989/90 she worked in the staff of the President of the State Parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in dealing with the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Soviet Zone / GDR. Collaboration in the Freundeskreis Mooshausen eV and in the literary society Gertrud von le Fort .

In 2016, Krüger received the Ansgar Medal from the Archdiocese of Hamburg and the Siemerling Social Prize from the Dreikönigsstiftung Neubrandenburg.
