Alexandru Papiu-Ilarian

Alexandru Papiu-Ilarian (born September 27, 1827 in Bezded / Sălaj ; † October 23, 1877 in Sibiu ) was a Romanian-Transylvanian politician and lawyer .

Life

The son of the Greek Catholic priest Ioan Pop-Bucur attended high school in Tîrgu Mureș from 1838 to 1842 and then the high school in Blaj . His mother Ana Pop-Bucur was born in Hodoşiu. In 1844 he moved to the Royal High School in Cluj due to disputes shortly before graduating from school . There he published the weekly Zorile pentru minte şi inimă in 1845/46 . Papiu-Ilarian was one of the organizers of the Romanian Revolution . He was subsequently sentenced to death in absentia by the Hungarians. He initially fled but returned to Transylvania. His political activity led to the murder of his father in 1849.

From 1849 to 1852 Papiu-Ilarian continued his law studies in Cluj-Napoca. He then obtained his doctorate in law in Padua . He then became a professor at the Academia Mihăileană in Jassy in 1855 . Four years later he was appointed legal consul of Moldova. From 1861 to 1869 Papiu-Ilarian was a member of the Bucharest Court of Cassation. In the meantime he was from October 12, 1863 to February 27, 1864 in the cabinet of Mihail Kogălniceanu Minister of Justice and from 1866 to 1868 Attorney General. On September 28, 1868 he became a member of the Romanian Academy . Alexandru Papiu-Ilarian died in Sibiu at the age of 50. He wrote several historical writings.

Honors

The Colegiul National "Al Papiu Ilarian" in Târgu Mureș was named after him in 1919.
