Alexei Ivanovich Saurin

Alexei Ivanovich Saurin ( Russian Алексей Иванович Саурин ; born February 24, 1950 ) is a Russian politician.

From 1997 to 2001 he was mayor of the city of Balakowo . When he ran for a second term of office in the mayoral elections in December 2000, there was a scandal: After Saurin narrowly missed an absolute majority in the first round, a court forbade him to stand in the second round because he provided false information when registering with regard to his fortune. Saurin appealed the judgment. Disagreement about the validity of the verdict resulted in Saurin's name appearing on one part of the ballot papers and missing on another. Since he received 70 percent of the vote where his name was included, he claimed the election victory for himself. The governor of Saratov Oblast , Dmitri Ayazkow, removed him from office. In the following months, a public prosecutor's investigation was launched against Saurin and he was held in custody for a few weeks.

Many journalists attributed the election events to a long-simmering conflict with Governor Ayazkov . Saurin is considered the protégé of Vyacheslav Volodin , a high-ranking functionary of the United Russia party (at that time the fatherland of all Russia ).

After his defeat in the conflict over mayor, Saurin initially held the post of head of the hunting department in the federal Ministry of Agriculture. Since 2004 he has held the position of deputy head of the supervisory authority for animal and plant protection.
