Life

Khomyakov was born into an old noble family. He received his education at home. In 1821 he passed the exam for a doctorate in mathematics at Moscow University . At that time, poems and translations were already being printed by him.

After he had done his military service in the years 1822-1825, Khomyakov moved abroad, where he occupied himself with painting and wrote the historical drama Yermak ( Ермак ).

In 1828 and 1829 Khomyakov took part in the Russo-Turkish War . After it ended, he left the military and went to his estate. He worked with various journals. In the article About Old and New ( О старом и новом ) in 1839, he laid the foundations of Slavophilia. In 1838 he began working on his main historical and philosophical work, Contributions to World History ( Записка о всемирной истории ).

Khomyakov represented liberal views on the peasant issue, the death penalty and freedom of expression. From 1850 he paid special attention to religious questions and the history of Russian Orthodoxy . The monarchy saw Khomyakov as the only acceptable form of government for Russia. He is considered to be the founder of the Sobornost concept.

While he was healing farmers during a cholera epidemic, Khomyakov fell ill and died in his home village in 1860. He is buried in Moscow.
