The Alexis River is an approximately 125 km long tributary of the Labrador Sea in the southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It is the third largest river in southern Labrador.

River course

The headwaters of the Alexis River is 113 km north of Rivière-Saint-Paul . The headwaters of the St. Lewis River , which runs further south, is only 10 km further southeast. The origin of the Alexis River is a nameless lake at an altitude of 450  m . The Alexis River flows in an easterly direction. At river kilometer 100 it joins a larger left tributary. The Alexis River eventually flows into the upper end of Alexis Bay , a 48 km long bay on the eastern Labrador coast. The village of Port Hope Simpson is 8 km east of the estuary on the south bank of Alexis Bay.

Hydrology

The Alexis River drains an area of ​​3,160 km². The mean discharge 38 km above the mouth is 52.4 m³ / s. The river usually carries the largest amounts of water at the level in May with an average of 217 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

Atlantic salmon and the anadromous and non-anadromous form of brook trout occur in the Alexis River . At river kilometer 37.5, a 3 meter high waterfall blocks the migratory fish .
