The St. Lewis River is an approximately 165 km long tributary of the Labrador Sea in the extreme southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The headwaters of the St. Lewis River is 110 km north of Rivière-Saint-Paul at an altitude of 450  m . The river initially flows 30 km to the southeast. It then turns to the east and finally to the east-northeast. The catchment area borders on that of the Pinware River to the south . The St. Lewis River eventually flows into the upper end of St. Lewis Inlet , a 35 km long fjord on the eastern Labrador coast. The lower reaches are characterized by narrow gorges.

Hydrology

The St. Lewis River drains an area of ​​2590 km². The mean discharge is 69 m³ / s. The river usually carries the largest amounts of water in May with an average of 292 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

Atlantic salmon are found in the lower reaches of the St. Lewis River . At river kilometers 25.4, 25.9 and 26.8 there are waterfalls with heights of 12.2, 3 and 6.1 m. The last waterfall is an insurmountable obstacle for migratory fish .
