The Pinware River is a 108 km long tributary of the Belle Isle Strait in the extreme southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . Above the confluence of the Western Waters at river kilometer 10, the river is also called County Cat River .

River course

The headwaters of the Pinware River form a small lake system at an altitude of 365  m, 65 km from the Labrador coast. The river flows mainly in a southerly direction. Major tributaries are Beaver Brook and Lost River . The southern section of the Trans-Labrador Highway ( Route 510 ) follows the course of the river for its last 18 km. The trunk road crosses the river at river kilometer 9. The Pinware River finally flows 2.2 km northeast of the municipality of Pinware into the Belle-Isle-Straße. A headland, on which the Pinware River Provincial Park is located, separates the 3.2 km long estuary of the Pinware River from the open sea. The Pinware River drains an area of ​​2,486 km².

Fish fauna

The Pinware River is accessible to migratory fish for the lower 49 kilometers . A 6.1 m high waterfall forms an insurmountable obstacle for their fish migration at this point . The most common fish caught in the river are Atlantic salmon , anadromous and non-anadromous brook trout, and American eel .
