Alfons Baiker

Alfons Baiker (born April 14, 1945 in Zurich ) is a chemist from Switzerland and professor of technical chemistry at the ETH Zurich .

life and work

Baiker studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich . His doctorate with Werner Richarz in 1974 was followed by his habilitation in the field of heterogeneous catalysis , after stays at various universities, including Stanford University . After returning to Switzerland in 1990, he was appointed full professor at the ETH. His research focus is on heterogeneous catalysis, solid-state chemistry , chemical reaction engineering and “green” chemistry . In 1996 he received the Karl Ziegler Visiting Professorship at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research and was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley .

His areas of work include asymmetric catalysis, chiral surfaces, catalytic oxidations, use of carbon dioxide in catalytic reactions, environmental catalysis, reactions in supercritical fluids, flame synthesis of catalysts and the in situ spectroscopy of catalytic processes. His research has received various awards and honors.
