Life

Colles father, the metalworker Isidoor Colle (1857-1930), was involved in the establishment of the first liberal workers' organizations in Belgium, in 1893 in the Liberale Werkersverdediging , also in the Liberale Metaalbewerkersbond , of which he was first chairman. He was also instrumental in the entry of the latter into the Ghent central association Help U Zelf , of which he also became chairman.

After attending primary school, Alfons Colle worked for various companies as a lathe operator and metalworker, and by attending an evening school he also obtained a land surveyor's diploma. From 1913 to 1914 he worked as a mechanic for Minerva in Antwerp , after which he moved to Ghent with his wife Elodie Lippens.

At the age of 20, Colle had become a secretary in the metalworking union of Liberale Werkersverdediging , after the First World War he founded the overarching liberal Flemish trade union federation Verbond der Liberale Vakbonden van both Vlaanderen together with Edmond Van Goethem and Gustaaf Van Damme and also became secretary there. In 1929 Colle became general director of the nationwide liberal association Nationale Centrale der Liberale Vakbonden van België (since 1938 Algemene Centrale der Liberale Vakverbonden van België (ACLVB) or German General Headquarters of the Liberal Unions of Belgium (AZLGB)).

From 1938 to 1946, Colle was a member of the Ghent City Council. Until the end of 1941, during the German occupation of Belgium in World War II, he provided the Brussels newspaper with information for the economic section. After the Second World War, Colle founded the World Union Of Liberal Trade Union Organizations (WULTUO) (also known under the French name Union mondiale des organizations syndicales sur basé économique et sociale libérale , UMOSBESL) in 1948 and became its first chairman.

Cole's son Armand Colle (1910-1992) was from 1959 to 1989 chairman of the ACLVB.
