Alfonso Leng

Alfonso Leng Haygus (born February 11, 1884 in Santiago de Chile , † November 7, 1974 ibid) was a Chilean composer and odontologist.

Leng never completed any systematic musical training. In 1905 he took courses in harmony and composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música with Enrique Soro and drew his knowledge from membership in musical groups such as Pedro Prados Los Diez , the Academia Ortiz de Zárate and the Sociedad Bach . In terms of style, he followed up on late Romantic composers such as Richard Wagner , Richard Strauss and Alexander Scriabin . His most important work was the symphonic poem La muerte de Alsino (1922). He also composed numerous songs based on poems by German, French and Chilean authors, an Andante para cuerdas (1905) and a collection of piano pieces under the title Doloras (1914). In 1957 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes for his musical work .

Leng also pursued a scientific career. He studied dentistry (graduated in 1909). He later founded the chairs of organic chemistry and dentistry at the Universidad de Chile and in 1945 became dean of the university's odontology faculty. He was a member of scientific organizations in the USA, Great Britain and Italy and has taught in Cuba, Argentina and Peru.
