Alfred Aho

Alfred Vaino Aho (born August 9, 1941 in Timmins , Ontario , Canada ) is a Canadian computer scientist.

From 1997 to 2002 he was Vice President of the Computing Sciences Research Center at Bell Labs , where he was primarily responsible for software development. He then became a Lawrence Gussman Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University .

Aho received his BA in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto and his Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science from Princeton University . He has published more than 60 technical papers and writings on computer algorithms , data structures , databases and compilers . He is also a co-developer of the awk programming language and the Aho-Corasick algorithm in 1975, as well as the first author of the Unix tools egrep and fgrep.

In 2003 he received the John von Neumann Medal of the IEEE for his contributions to the fundamentals of computer science and the areas of algorithm and software technology . In the same year he also became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2013 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Canada .
