Alfred Bloch (linguist)

Alfred Bloch (born April 18, 1915 in Basel ; † July 11, 1983 there ) was a Swiss linguist.

life and work

Alfred Bloch, son of the engineer Max Bloch and Suzanne geb. Weil, studied comparative linguistics, classical philology and Islamic studies at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1939. phil. doctorate and habilitation in 1942 . He became associate professor in 1950 and full professor for Indo-European and Indo-Iranian philology in 1953 , and from 1949 to 1955 he was lecturer in Hebrew at the theological faculty in Basel. In 1962, the single became the holder of a newly created chair for comparative linguistics with a special focus on Indology . His research in the field of ancient Arabic poetry is highlighted.
