Alfred Dubucand (born November 25, 1828 in Paris , † 1894 ibid) was a French animal sculptor .

life and work

Hirsch, 1872

Alfred Dubucand studied with Justin Marie Lequien and Antoine-Louis Barye .

He mainly made animals, groups of animals and hunting scenes, including a number of deer, dog and horse sculptures, whereby he attached great importance to the realistic elaboration of the anatomical details of his subjects. For example, the veins in the legs of his animal sculptures can often be seen, and the animals never appear rigid, but in their natural movements and positions. Other of his works depict North African scenes with Arab figures such as nomads on horses and camels or portrait busts.

Dubucand made his debut in 1867 with the portrait of a pheasant at the Paris Salon of the Société des Artistes Français . Until 1883 he exhibited here regularly; In 1879 won a third class medal. His last exhibit in the salon was Cavalier et femme arabes à la fontaine , an Arab rider and a woman at a fountain. Works with a signature EA Dubucand , which were exhibited at the salon between 1893 and 1890, were probably made by a relative.
