Alfred Heinrich (ornithologist)

Alfred Heinrich (born March 27, 1895 in Ebersbach / Sa. , † November 28, 1974 ) was a German ornithologist and homeland researcher whose life and work are closely tied to his hometown of Ebersbach.

Life

Already while attending school in Ebersbach, Alfred Heinrich was intensively concerned with the local bird life and with weather observations, which he recorded with devotion by hand. In addition, he dealt early on with the local history of Upper Lusatia and collected articles published in print on the history of the town of Ebersbach. Later he specialized in the care of pets, the care of exotic birds and reptiles as well as several fish aquariums. At an early stage he took over the management of the working group for ornithology in the GDR cultural association . He also actively supported the reconstruction of the local history museum of the city of Ebersbach / Sa on the Schlechteberg. after the Second World War.

For the immediate vicinity of Eberbach, Alfred Heinrich was able to identify 106 different breeding bird species by 1966 and document them in his handwritten card index with information about their occurrence and frequency. He enriched his notes with information from reliable colleagues and friends as well as with clippings from newspapers and magazines, many of which he wrote himself. Alfred Heinrich identified a further 60 bird species as migrants or occasional guests who only settled briefly in Ebersbach and the surrounding area, including alpine choughs, snow and hawk owls and golden eagles . About the unusually early arrival of a barn swallow he reported u. a. 1953 in the trade journal Die Vogelwelt: magazine for bird protection and ornithology .

In addition to the extensive bird watching, Alfred Heinrich devoted himself to the treatment of injured or sick birds that had been brought to him from the region around Ebersbach. When he was barely able to leave his house due to increasing walking difficulties, he increasingly enjoyed watching the birds at the feeder.

His written estate is administered in the Museum of Natural History in Görlitz .
