Alfred Johan Morpurgo (born August 18, 1899 in Paramaribo ; † June 5, 1973 ibid) was a journalist and politician in Suriname , who was Minister of Education and Popular Development between 1958 and 1963.

Life

Alfred Johan Morpurgo, whose father David Simon Goedman Morpurgo editor at the daily Suriname , was also active as a journalist and editor of the Roman Catholic daily De Surinamer . In 1943 he founded his own daily newspaper, Het Nieuws . In July 1958 he was appointed Minister for Education and People's Development (Minister van Onderwijs en Volksontwikkeling) in the government of Prime Minister Severinus Désiré Emanuels and held this office until the end of Emanuels' term in June 1963. In 1961 the Ordinance on Primary Education (Camp Onderwijsverordening) adopted. The first phase of the construction of new school buildings supported by the European Economic Community (EEC) also fell during his term of office . He also expanded the school supervision and the establishment of a planning department in the Ministry of Education. In addition, a general curriculum for teaching was designed with scientific support.

Morpurgo was also involved in cultural and scientific policy and was temporarily chairman of the Surinamese section of the advisory board for cultural cooperation with the Netherlands.
