Severinus Desiré "Freek" Emanuels (born February 27, 1910 in Rotterdam ; † August 27, 1981 in The Hague ) was a Dutch lawyer , diplomat and colonial official and politician in Suriname , who was Prime Minister of Suriname between 1951 and 1952 .

Life

Severinus Desiré Emanuels completed his studies in law as well as literature and philosophy at the University of Utrecht after attending school and graduated with the doctoraal examen . He then served as a judge in the Dutch East Indies between 1934 and 1950 . In 1952 he was appointed Minister of Finance (Landsminister van Financiën) in Suriname in the government of Prime Minister Archibald Currie and held this ministerial office until 1955, before he was Counselor at the US Embassy between 1956 and 1958 .

Emanuel, a member of the National Party NPS (National Party of Suriname) was dissolved on 16 July 1958 Johan Ferrier as Prime Minister of Suriname (Premier van Suriname) , and held this position until June 1963, after Johan Adolf Pengel became his successor. In his government he also took over the office of Minister of the Interior (Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken) between 1958 and 1963 . After the resignation of Hemradj Shriemisier , he acted provisionally as Minister for Justice and Police (Minister van Justitie en Politie) from 1962 and 1963 . Subsequently, between 1963 and 1964 he held the position of Minister Plenipotentiary (Gevolmachtigde minister) of Suriname with the Dutch government.

Freek Emanuels then switched to the diplomatic service and between 1965 and 1968 he was employed as a press and cultural attaché at the Dutch embassy in Mexico . In 1968 he became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands in Trinidad and Tobago and remained in this post until 1974. As such, he was 1969 to 1974 as Ambassador to Barbados and from 1970 to 1974 as ambassador to Guyana accredited .
