Alfred Renz
Alfred Renz (born July 15, 1877 in Saulgau , † September 29, 1930 in Stuttgart ) was a German painter and illustrator.
Life
Renz first learned and practiced the profession of decorative painter. Around 1904/1908, building on this, he completed his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Kunstakademie in Stuttgart. He was a student of Robert von Haug and Christian Landenberger . He was awarded a gold medal for his academic performance. He taught until 1922 at the School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart . Erich Zeyer and Walter Strich-Chapell as well as his son Walter Renz, born in 1908, were among his students . He also worked as a book illustrator. As a freelance artist, he went on long painting trips through Germany - with a focus on Hamburg -, Holland and Italy.
He developed a particularly fluid tempera painting technique early on, which allowed a lively depiction of moving street scenes. His oil paintings also take up this spontaneous painting style. In addition to painting landscapes, street and harbor paintings were the main focus of his work. During his extensive painting trips to Hamburg and Rotterdam he created numerous tempera pictures, which later served him as a template for large-format oil paintings in his studio. a. in the Blohm and Voss shipyard, in the Vulkan shipyard, in the port of Hamburg with elevated railway, and on the ship Cap Pololonio, the largest ship in the German merchant fleet at the time. These images capture the very impressive events and the atmosphere in two ocean ports.
In 1925 Alfred Renz founded the family business Renz Bilderrahmen in Stuttgart together with his son Erich Renz . The company was u. a. worked for well-known art houses such as Ketterer and Schaller and existed until 2017.
