Alfred Sarasin was born in Basel in spring 1865 as the son of the entrepreneur and politician Karl Sarasin . In 1900 he took over the banking business founded in 1841 from Fritz Riggenbach and founded the general partnership A. Sarasin & Cie with Arthur Streichenberg-Mylius . Under his leadership, Bank Sarasin developed into one of the most important private banks in the Swiss financial center.

From 1890, Sarasin was married to the factory owner's daughter Emma Frieda Iselin (1865–1929). The couple went by the double name Sarasin-Iselin. The son Bernhard Sarasin (-La Roche) emerged from this marriage in 1892 and died prematurely in 1950. His successor in the management of the bank was his son Alfred E. Sarasin (1922–2005). Alfred Sarasin-Iselin's great-grandchildren, the Swiss bankers Erik , Andreas and Yves Sarasin , sold the bank to the Dutch Rabobank in 2007 . Rabobank in turn sold the bank to the Swiss Safra Group in Geneva.
