Alfred Schmitt (astronomer)

Alfred Schmitt (born November 30, 1907 in Bust , † April 2, 1973 ) was a French astronomer and asteroid discoverer .

He worked at the Algiers Observatory in Bouzaréah , a suburb of Algiers , in the 1930s and 1940s and at the Royal Observatory in Ukkel in the 1950s . In the course of his studies between 1932 and 1953 he discovered the asteroids (1215) Boyer , (1614) Goldschmidt , (1622) Chacornac and (3156) Ellington . From 1955 to 1958 he was director of the observatory in Quito , the capital of Ecuador .

Schmitt was married to the astronomer Odette Bancilhon .

Honors

The asteroid (1617) Alschmitt was named after him by his colleague in Algiers, Louis Boyer .
