Alfred Sormann

Alfred Sormann (born May 16, 1861 in Danzig ; † September 17, 1913 in Berlin ) was a German classical pianist, composer and music teacher.

life and work

Born in Danzig, Alfred Sormann studied in Hamburg with Friedrich Adolf Mehrtens and at the Royal University of Music in Berlin with Ernst Rudorff , Karl Heinrich Barth , Philipp Spitta and Woldemar Bargiel . In 1885 he was also a student of Franz Liszt . In 1886 he made his concert debut. He then successfully gave concerts in important German cities. In 1889 he became court pianist for Friedrich Wilhelm II, the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg.

Sormann lived and taught in Berlin, among others at the Stern Conservatory . He died in Berlin in 1913.

He composed the operas Die Sibylle von Tivoli (Berlin, 1902) and King Harald (Stettin, 1909) as well as the Piano Concerto in E minor (opus 7), two string quartets, a piano trio, concert etudes and other piano pieces.
