Alfred Stanislas Langlois des Essarts (born August 9, 1811 in Passy , † May 18, 1893 in Clermont-Ferrand , Puy-de-Dôme department ) was a French librarian and writer .

Des Essarts completed his school days at the Lycée Henri IV . There he began his first literary attempts. At the age of 19 he made his debut in 1830 with a lyric anthology “Le donjon de Vincennes”.

Subsequently, the Essart earned his living as an art and literary critic for various newspapers and magazines; u. a. "La France littéraire" or "L'Écho français". But he was also partly responsible for daily journalistic events. Through this work and his interest in contemporary literature, he soon found access to the Parnassians . Later the publisher Alphonse Lemerre invited him to work on the anthology Le Parnasse contemporain , which later became famous . Lemerre also included some poems by his son Emmanuel in this collection.

Des Essarts married in Passy Elisa Gasquet († 1846), a writer who operated under the pseudonym E. Dionysis . With her he had a son, Emmanuel des Essarts .

At the age of 35, in 1846, Des Essart got a job as an assistant librarian at the Sainte-Geneviève library . In 1873 he was appointed head of this library. When he resigned his offices in 1884 and retired, he did so with the title of "Conservateur honoraire".

Des Essarts moved to his son in Clermont-Ferrand and died there on May 18, 1893, before his 82nd birthday.
