Alfredo Helsby
Alfredo Helsby Hazell (born July 22, 1862 in Valparaíso , † July 24, 1933 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter. The son of the British photographer William Glaskell Helsby came to painting at the suggestion of Thomas Somerscales , whom he met in Valparaíso. Later he was a student of Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma and Juan Francisco González . In 1906 he received a scholarship for a stay in Europe and studied in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens . With Valenzuela Puelma he organized exhibitions of Chilean painters in London and Paris.
In 1908 he returned to Chile and met the Spanish painter Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor , who inspired the Generación del Trece . He created a portrait of him and remained on friendly terms with him. From 1914 to 1920 he lived in San Francisco, New Orleans and Washington. In New York he visited the studio of John Joseph Enneking . Helsby has received several awards for his works (more than 800 paintings by him are known), including a First Prize from the Exposición Internacional de Santiago in 1900 and a second prize from the Exposición Internacional del Centenario in 1910.
