AlgaeBase is a global species - database with information on all groups of algae as well as to a group of flowering plants , the sea grasses .

As of September 2019, the database contains around 7200 species of red algae (Rhodophyta) and around 2000 species of brown algae (Phaeophyceae). Of the green algae , the Chlorophyta with around 6600 species and the Charophyta with around 4,800 species are recorded. The diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are represented with around 15,700 species.

AlgaeBase grew out of Michael Guiry's website on algae and has grown into a database of algae from around the world, as well as freshwater, land, brackish and marine habitats. In September 2019 there were 156,231 species and infraspecific names, as well as 21,998 images, 60,381 bibliographic elements and 445,318 distribution data sets in the database.

Programming is done by VisualID ( Pier Kuipers and Caoilte Guiry ) and the compilation of the data has been funded by the Irish Department of Education and Science's PRTLI 3 and 4 programs .
