The Algeria Shrine Temple , also known as the Helena Civic Center , is a monument in Helena , Lewis and Clark County , Montana . The building previously served as a Masonic temple and is now used as a civic center.

Building description

The Algeria Shrine Temple was in 1921 for 200,000 dollars in the style of oriental architecture completed by the architect Roscoe Hugenin. It has a minaret that is 17 stories high. The building consists of two main wings that are six floors high and is largely tunnelled. In 1939 an extension was added to the rear. The usable area is 6130 m². The Algeria Shrine Temple has 244 doors but only 86 windows.

history

In a series of earthquakes in October 1935, the building suffered structural damage, and contrary to rumors to the contrary, the minaret did not topple over. The following January, the Shriners , who had been using the Algeria Shrine Temple as their Masonic Temple , persuaded the city ​​to purchase the building, repair it and use it as a community center. In July 1938, it was finally sold to the city for $ 46,500.

The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 1988 .
