Algimantas Baltakis

Algimantas Baltakis (born February 15, 1930 in Leliūnai, Debeikiai Office , Utena District ) is a Lithuanian poet , literary critic , editor and translator .

Life

After graduating from high school in Kaunas , he graduated from the University of Vilnius in 1954 with a degree in Lituanistik .

From 1952 to 1956 Baltakis worked for the magazine "Tarybinė moteris" as head of the literature department, then until 1990 with a two-year break in the editorial team of the literary magazine "Pergalė". Since 1990 he has worked in the editorial department of the literary and cultural magazine "Metai".

Works

Baltakis' first works appeared in 1952 . His early poems are distinguished by their lyricism, which is based on folk song poetry, as well as by their Soviet-ideological coloring. In his later works there are mainly poems that describe topics from everyday life. In the “Strazdiškio elegijos” (“Elegies from Strazdiškis”) collection, his first childhood impressions, the surroundings and the inhabitants of his home village are discussed. The poems in “Vienuolynas” (“Monastery”) deal primarily with the turning point , when Lithuania regained its independence. Many of his poems have been set to music.

Blatakis has also published various literary critical books as well as translations of the poems of Blok , Roschdestwenski , Jevtušenko , Vācietis and others. Many of his poetry collections were also published in Latvian and Russian .
