Ali Akbar Safaian is considered a representative of Iranian modernism. In his work he processes poetic imaginary worlds that are influenced by the mystical literature of Iran, as well as social issues such as war, resistance and the relationship between man and machine. The creative phases of his work are connected by the question of the essence of things. According to him, art for him is an attempt to "dig up being".

His paintings and sculptures, especially those from the 1970s, show the metamorphosis and union of human, animal and organic elements. His works were assigned to Iranian surrealism by the art critic Behrouz Suresrafil in the Ayandegan newspaper. This attribution was again challenged by the art critic "Florence" (pseudonym) in the newspaper Ayandegan; he assigned his work to the "fantastic". The art critic and writer Javad Mojabi writes in "90 Years of Renewal in Iranian Art" (Tehran 2016):

“Safaian is one of the most important artists of the 1970s. […] I wrote an article in the daily Etelaat about his first exhibition at Khane-ye Aftab . I announced a young, fresh artist there who light-footedly brings forth his wondrous fantasies. The main subjects of his works are man and nature in a tender relationship. In these works people are interwoven with flowers, plants, earth, sea and mountains; man is part of nature, he neither dominates nor opposes it. […] They [man and woman, editor's note. Ed.] Become one with mother nature, the history of her existence is shown in the language of shiny and breathtaking playful lines and surface layers. "

In Ali Akbar Safaian's middle phase paintings from the 1980s on, social issues are also reflected. In it he deals with topics such as war, resistance and the uprooting of people. Important works of this phase are the pair of paintings War and Peace . Ali Akbar Safaian later devoted himself to mixed media and relief works. The relief series "Erderbe" (2004–2007) and "Erbe (2007-) are created. These relief works show seemingly organic to sometimes completely abstract structures. In contrast to those in the" Erderbe "series, the works in the" Erbe "series are monochrome. In contrast to the artist's first and middle creative phase, the works do not show any figurative means of expression.

Ali Akbar Safaian's work includes relief works, paintings, sculptures and sculptures, as well as prints and enamel works.
