Ali Gharbi (swimmer)
Ali Gharbi (born April 18, 1955 in Carthage / Tunis ; † December 12, 2009 in Tunis) was a Tunisian swimmer . He swam for Club Africain in Tunis and took part in the 1976 Olympic Games for his country . He is considered the best swimmer in Africa in the 1970s and was successful several times at the African Games and African Championships . Gharbi swam 80 national records and 30 African records between 1970 and 1982 and was 64 times Tunisian champion. In total, Gharbi won 148 medals in his career.
At the Africa Games in Lagos in 1973 he won gold once, silver three times and bronze once. In 1978 in Algiers he won eight gold and one silver medal.
At the 1974 African Swimming Championships in Cairo , he won 7 gold and 2 silver. Three years later, at the championships in his hometown Tunis, he won a total of eleven silver medals.
