Ali Habib Mahmud

Ali Habib Mahmud ( Arabic علي حبيب محمود, DMG ʿAlī Ḥabīb Maḥmūd ) (born January 1, 1939 in Tartus ; † March 20, 2020 ) was a Syrian general and politician .

Life

Mahmud grew up in Tartus and joined the Syrian Army at a young age in 1959 . He took part in the October war against Israel in 1973 and was involved in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. From 1994 to 2002 he commanded the Syrian special forces and was then Commander in Chief of the Syrian Army until 2007. From June 3, 2009 to August 8, 2011, Mahmud was Minister of Defense of Syria, replacing Hasan Turkmani . In 2011, the American government imposed a travel ban on him. According to a media report, in the early summer of 2011, just before the start of the civil war in Syria , Mahmud failed to implement an order allegedly initiated by Bashar al-Assad to use the military against unarmed demonstrators. Daud Radschha became his successor as Minister of Defense .

According to Kamal al-Labwani, the spokesman for the Syrian national coalition, Mahmud left for Turkey in 2013 , but this was not confirmed.
