Alibag ( Marathi अलिबाग Alibāg ; also Alibagh ) is a small coastal and port town in the state of Maharashtra in the district of Raigad in India , 30 km south of Mumbai on the coast of the Arabian Sea , with about 20,000 inhabitants . Sometimes beautiful, wide sandy beaches, but also rocky beaches, which extend about 30 km over Chaul , to Murud and Janjira .
Alibag is the seat of the district administration.
history
Alibag was built as a fort by Shivaji in the 18th century to counter the growing influence of the Janjira Siddis , the expanding Portuguese and British.
reachability
Alibag can be reached from Mumbai by ferries departing from India Gate . Overland, the route leads through Pen , a country town on National Highway 4 , which connects Mumbai and Goa . From Pune you can reach Alibag and the beaches via the expressway, which you leave at Khopoli in a westerly direction.
economy
(Mostly local) tourism, fishing and agriculture. Rice, coconuts, vegetables and mangoes are grown. In recent years there have been some industrial settlements.
