The Alice Monument , also known as the Alice Obelisk , is a monument in Darmstadt . It stands north of the main Catholic church of St. Ludwig and is reminiscent of Grand Duchess Alice .
History and description
The Alice Memorial was erected in 1902 based on a joint design by the sculptor Ludwig Habich and the architect Adolf Zeller . Stylistically, the monument belongs to Art Nouveau . The base of the monument is made of granite , on two sides of the base there are small semicircular water basins with gargoyles. Above it rises an obelisk made of Enviller limestone with four larger-than-life girl figures on its edges in the lower area. There are stylized tree trunks between the figures, the branches of which form foliage above the girls' heads. Above it is the obelisk without any further plastic decoration. On the front side of the monument, between the girls heads, there is a gilded bronze - relief showing the Grand Duchess Alice.
