Alice Brown Chittenden (born October 14, 1859 in Brockport , Monroe County , New York ; † October 13, 1944 in San Francisco , California ) was an American painter who mainly painted flowers, portraits and landscapes and received various awards for them and the winner is. She also taught at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (now the San Francisco Art Institute ) from 1897 to 1941 .

Life

Alice Brown Chittenden was born on October 14, 1859, the daughter of Joseph Gladding Chittenden (1826-1897) and Ann Miriam Green Chittenden (1826-1901) in Brockport , New York State . Her parents had actually moved to San Francisco the year before , but her mother was returning to Brockport for her birth. Alice Chittenden also had a sister, Carrie, who was two years her junior.

Because her father worked in a timber factory in San Francisco, Alice Chittenden attended the Denman Grammar School on site. When she graduated in 1876, she won the silver medal as the second best in her class. She then studied at the School of Design (now the San Francisco Art Institute ) from 1880 to 1882 , where she also won various medals for her pictures. In 1886 she married Charles Parshall Overton, but left him a year later and returned to her parents. A few months later, their daughter Miriam Overton was born. In 1897 her father died. Alice Chittenden then divorced her husband in 1900 and continued to live in San Francisco with her daughter and mother. Alice Chittenden did not remarry afterwards.

Alice Brown Chittenden died in San Francisco on October 13, 1944, at the age of 84, the day before her 85th birthday.
