Alice Garner

Alice Garner (* 1969 ) is an Australian actress .

Life

Garner, daughter of writer Helen Garner and an actor, received her PhD in French history from the University of Melbourne . She made her debut as an underage actress in a major role in the 1982 drama Monkey Grip , which was used to film a 1977 novel by her mother. This role earned her a nomination for the Australian Film Institute Award in the same year , but her mother advised her against the acting career. After a six-year hiatus, she played a larger role in the film drama Lover Boy (1988), after which she only had a few guest appearances in television series in the five other years up to the role alongside Noah Taylor in the drama The Nostradamus Kid (1993).

The role in the comedy Love and Other Disasters (1996) earned Garner another AFI Award nomination in 1996 and the Film Critics Circle of Australia Award in 1997 . In the comedy Strange Planet (1999) she took on one of the leading roles alongside Claudia Karvan and Naomi Watts . For the soundtrack to the film drama One Night the Moon (2001) she received the Australian Screen Music Award in 2002 together with several other participants .

The actress is married and has three children. She published two books: Her PhD and The Student Chronicles about her student days.
