Life

Glenn's political career began in 1974 when she was elected to the Dublin Corporation , of which she was a member until 1991. There she became the first woman to become a member of the Dublin Port and Docks Board .

After two unsuccessful attempts in 1973 and 1977 Glenn was first elected in 1981 for Fine Gael in the constituency of Dublin Central in the 22nd Dáil Éireann . In the elections in February 1982 she was unable to defend her seat. When elections for the 24th Dáil Éireann became necessary in November of the same year, she ran again and this time successfully, for her party in the Dublin Central constituency . In the 1987 elections, in which Glenn ran as an independent, she was unable to defend her seat.

As an MP she came into conflict with Garret FitzGerald during the reign of Garret FitzGerald , who enacted a series of laws to liberalize Irish law in the field of abortion , divorce and contraception. Among other things, Glenn called on her party colleagues to vote against the wording of the abortion referendum drawn up by the government.

Her best-known quote "You must agree - a woman voting for divorce is like a turkey voting for Christmas" she said in 1986 in the run-up to the divorce referendum.

Alice Glenn was married to Brigadier General William Glenn , Commander in Chief of the Irish Air Corps. The marriage resulted in two sons. She was a member of the pro-life movement and the Irish Housewives' Association .

She spent the last six years of her life at Our Lady's Manor Nursing Home , a nursing home in Bulloch Castle in Dalkey, County Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery .
