Alien Swarm is a computer game by Valve , which was released on July 19, 2010 as a free download on the Internet distribution platform Steam . The aim of the game is to do the tasks of the respective level with a team of four players in co-op mode while various aliens are attacking. This principle is very reminiscent of Valve's zombie shooter Left 4 Dead , but has various differences. The game only has one campaign. As it is not commercially available, there is no USK classification.

The game

Gameplay

Alien Swarm is played from a bird's eye view . You can also play in first person by entering a command into the console . Four players can take part in a co-op game to battle their way through the only official Jacob's Rest campaign or community-created, science-fiction- based levels. The 40 playable weapons are unlocked in the course of the game by gaining experience, some of which can only be used by one of the four classes. The four classes are: Officer, Special Weapons, Medic and Tech, each of which covers certain areas of responsibility and two characters are assigned to each class, which means that only two players can play the same class in each game.

action

Aliens attacked Jacob's Rest mining colony in 2052 . Four Marines are dropped off to evacuate the survivors; however, all of them have long been dead. So they fight their way through the facility, destroying as many alien eggs as possible, until finally a nuclear weapon can be armed and the marines are picked up from the planet at the last moment.

development

Originally, Alien Swarm was a mod based on Unreal Tournament 2004 that is still available for download today. This was supposed to be ported to the source engine , but this project remained quiet for a long time until it became known with the release that Valve had hired the team behind Alien Swarm to bring out an official version. In August 2010 the developer released an update for the game that introduces an additional higher level of difficulty. Many players had previously complained that the game was too easy.

SDK

With the release of Alien Swarm, Valve also released the Alien Swarm Software Development Kit , which enables modders and mappers to create their own campaigns and levels based on Alien Swarm. This option is an important feature given the brevity of the official campaign.

Ratings

Alien Swarm received a Metascore of 77% from the Metacritic website . PC Games gave it a fun rating of 81% and gave Alien Swarm a positive overall rating: “Well-functioning co-op game”, “Brute, sweaty action passages” and “Many upgrade options”. On the other hand, it was rated negatively, the "small scope for release" and that it is "sometimes a bit confusing".

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

On April 20, 2017, a remake of the game was released under the name Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop . The game is still being maintained (as of 2020) and published regularly with bug fixes.
