Alison Uttley

Alison Uttley (born December 17, 1884 in Cromford , † May 7, 1976 in Derbyshire ; full name Alice Jane Taylor ) was a British writer .

Life

Alison Uttley was born Alice Jane Taylor on December 17, 1884. She grew up in Cromford, Derbyshire. She first attended the Lea School in Holloway, and later the Lady Manners School in Bakewell. Alison Uttley developed a taste for science which led to a scholarship at the University of Manchester . She studied physics and finished her studies, up to then the second woman in England, with a university degree. Then she went to Cambridge , where he studied teaching of Physics. From 1908 she taught at the Fulham Secondary School for girls.

In 1911 she met James Arthur Uttley and married him. Four years later, son John Corin Taylor was born (1915–1978). As a result of his participation in the First World War, the health of James Arthur Uttley deteriorated visibly. He died in 1930. As a single mother, Alison Uttley had to find a way to keep herself and her son afloat financially. So she started writing children's books.

Services

Her first children's book was published in 1929 under the original title: The Squirrel, The Hare and the Little Gray Rabbit - this was the beginning of the very successful Gray Rabbit series. Alison Uttley wrote a total of more than 100 books, including the well-known story A Traveler in Time . In the time travel novel, a city child takes part in the country life of their relatives, but also moves effortlessly into the time of their ancestors, who lived in the same farmhouse in the 16th century. At that time, Mary Queen of Scots was a prisoner at the nearby Wingfield Manor . Although the girl knows the real fate of Maria Stuart, she worries about the residents of the house who want to help Maria Stuart escape.

Her best-known works, however, include the stories about Mademoiselle Eichkatz, Meister Lampe and Graupfötchen (English original title: "The Squirrel, the Hare an the little gray rabbit")

Awards

Alison Uttley received the Honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1970 . The University of Manchester bestowed this on her because of her literary achievements.
